The Ever Present Element of Fear – Part 1

The Ever Present Element of Fear – Part 1

One of the first things that I encounter when working with my clients, whether it’s a business client or a client that I am working with regarding life issues, is the ever present element of fear. Often times people don’t even understand the depths of how fear is showing up for them in their lives. They don’t necessarily attribute a particular behavior to fear, but when I start to pull back the layers looking for the actual culprit, most often the center of it is fear.

Fear is the greatest thief of many peoples’ otherwise amazing successes. I believe that our greatest blessings are found on the other side of our greatest fears. But you would have to be willing to do the work to get to the other side of it. That is among some of the most challenging work humans have to do here, because very few people show up ready and prepared to tackle fear head on.

The fear can be associated with what others may think about them. It may be connected to them not believing in themselves. It could be tied to their fear of failing, but fear is usually the source.

Imagine what you could be and what you could do if you had no fear. Look at the different places and seasons in your life where perhaps you wanted one result, but ended up with something else. Did you end up with the result you had because of fear?

Has fear prevented you from trying a new career? Did it prevent you from taking the plunge to love fully? Did fear prevent you from moving to a place that you’ve always dreamed about? Fear shows up in all places and spaces in our lives.

Do you let fear dictate what you’re going to do, how you’re going to do it and who you choose to do it with? Or do you feel fear and push through it anyway?

Pushing through fear is not the action of most. Most people will feel fear, be paralyzed in it, back away from it and retreat so they ultimately don’t have to deal with it at all.

The Gift of Failure

The Gift of Failure

Failure is among one of the most undesirable occurrences in people’s lives.

When people have what the world considers a failure, it will often paralyze them. It can keep them from moving forward and reaching their goals. It is a death killer to dreams.

But what I’ve learned from so called failure, is that there isn’t such a thing as failure at all. If you take the lessons from what has occurred, you will learn that those lessons were mandatory, even essential to get you where you needed to go.

The world calls it a failure. I call it a fantastic opportunity to succeed, because you got another necessary piece to the puzzle for what is required.

When I think about all of the things I would not be doing today, if I allowed so called failures to stop me, I could weep. I could weep, because it would have been such a disruption to my life’s plan.

All of those alleged failures were part of God’s plan for me. If I had given up long ago, I would have self-sabotaged my own divine destiny.

I often think about all of those who have somehow sabotaged or delayed their own life’s blessings, because they believed they somehow failed and they allowed it to stop them.

You cannot allow failure to block you, nor stop you. You have to simply adjust, course correct and continue moving ahead.

The best course in life to succeed is to abandon daily what is no longer working for you. Try out a new way of being, a new way of doing and see what results are produced.

You want to fail yourself forward and do it often, because every time you do it and there’s an alleged failure, you have the necessary information you need to go even further than you did the last time.

And before you know it, if you keep pressing forward, you will ultimately, undoubtedly cross your ultimate finish line.

The Misconception of Failure

The Misconception of Failure

Many of you who have heard me speak know that I had been greatly affected financially (like so many Americans) by what is now termed, “The Great Recession.” As a real estate attorney, broker, investor and developer, I was hit very hard by the real estate bust.

I was speaking with a new client yesterday and she was sharing with me how deeply affected she was by that time and how it makes her feel like a failure. That sentiment is shared by many and the affects from the recession are still very present in the lives of many Americans today. It has been a reoccurring theme I’ve been hearing a lot lately from clients and just from people in general which moved me to write about it today.

So, I just want to share with you what I shared with the client that I spoke to last night.

Failure and disappointment is something I’ve talked about repeatedly on Women on the Move. Although, I myself don’t even believe in so called “failures,” I do understand that the vast majority of people think in those terms. I happen to believe that every life experience comes to teach us a lesson. And if the lesson is learned from the experience, how could it possibly be deemed a failure? But for the purpose of this blog post, I will use the word failure in the way it is most commonly used.

Having obstacles and challenges to overcome in this life do not make you a failure.

You must pick up the coat of failure and put it on to claim it. It is not mandated for you.

You have to take the lessons that come from them, dust yourself off and push yourself forward. You can’t imprison yourself in a space and place that doesn’t allow you to move forward, because that just doesn’t serve you.

So, if you are in that place and space, whatever the failure in your mind may be, you must release it. It could be a perceived failure in a business, relationship, situation or a dream. I now ask you to let that perceived failure go. Take a moment to grieve it, if you so need. Cry, scream, get angry, write your feelings and disappointments down, do whatever you need to do to release it and then very simply – let it go. You must let it go.

Because if you don’t let it go, it will haunt you and it will destroy anything, and everything, you attempt to do moving forward. There’s a great quote by Iyanla Vanzant that says, “until you heal the wounds of your past, you will continue to bleed.” And it will bleed in ways that you don’t even know. It will bleed into and onto things that you will be totally and completely unconscious about.

So, my prayer for you is that you learn to let it go and instead of sitting in the pain of that perceived failure and disappointment, you courageously get up, run on and proceed to your next level of being. I will be praying for you to get there and holding space for you there until you do.
