One of the Top Reasons Why Entrepreneurship is Down in America

One of the Top Reasons Why Entrepreneurship is Down in America

Entrepreneurship is down in America. Americans are starting fewer businesses and new companies are going out of business sooner. One of the top reasons why businesses close is because of the lack of access to capital. Limited capital is one of the biggest challenges I hear from business owners who are trying to launch, grow or even maintain a business.

The non-profit organization, Kiva has assisted business owners in alleviating some of this challenge by creating a crowdfunding platform for loans up to $10,000. These are 0% interest and no fee loans. I recently attended a Kiva event designed for business owners to learn more about their platform. I was quite impressed with both their record and their efforts.

Crowdfunding has been a very popular way for businesses to raise money in recent years. It is where the general public is able to invest money to support different businesses.

Kiva helps small business owners by giving them access to capital to launch or expand their businesses. With the support of local organizations and partners, Kiva has assisted in financing over 600 entrepreneurs throughout New York City.

In NYC, minority-owned businesses represent 70% of those assisted. Women-owned businesses represent 61%. The top industries are service, food and retail, but the types of businesses run the gamut.

Kiva started by assisting entrepreneurs outside of the US to raise money for their businesses which has been providing ongoing income for families and changing lives. They have assisted millions of entrepreneurs in raising over $1 billion dollars around the world.

Many of the businesses they initially started with were in distressed countries. The vast majority of these businesses were owned by women entrepreneurs. In recent years, Kiva, the US based company, decided to bring their efforts to the states. With entrepreneurship currently on the decline in America, Kiva saw the opportunity to support would-be entrepreneurs to create businesses and assist other entrepreneurs with the funds they need to stay in business.

They now have a new initiative to assist farmers across the country. So, they have been extending financing to community farms and farmers markets across New York City.

They have also partnered with the City of New York through the WE NYC program to assist funding women entrepreneurs in New York City.

If you are in need of capital to launch or grow your business, Kiva is a wonderful place to start on the long road to funding your entrepreneurial dream.

The Power of Being Good To Your Inner Self

The Power of Being Good To Your Inner Self

We are often our harshest critics. We judge ourselves based on the things we do, the things we don’t do and all the things we still have yet to do.

And although it’s a great skill to self evaluate, if you don’t do it in the most loving way, instead of building yourself up, you’ll be part of tearing your spirit down.

Dr. Maya Angelou said, “when you know better, you do better.”

Instead of beating yourself over the head and absorbing a ton of negative energy in the process – how about taking some time to first thank yourself for what you have accomplished, evaluate where you are, look at where you want to go and identify the gaps in between.

We all have areas of our lives we want to improve. We all have goals and ambitions we want to achieve. But hold yourself to them in the most caring way. Do not become one of the naysayers for your own life. Your desires and wishes cannot survive in that space. They cannot thrive in that space. They cannot even live in that space.

Being good to your inner self doesn’t mean that you are not a realist about where you are or where you may be at any given time. But what it does is identify the issues and looks at the holes and gaps necessary to be filled to get you to your desired end.

It is not going to happen overnight. To get to any destination, you must first take the necessary steps to get you there. You have to create a plan and execute it daily to make sure you’re on your way to your goal mark.

Get the support you need from wherever you need to get it to fill in the gaps to move your life forward, but do it in a loving way.

Because being good to your inner self shows others what you expect from them in the level of goodness they give to you.

Traveler Alert: Your Next Low Fare Airline Ticket May Cost You A Lot More Than You Think

Traveler Alert: Your Next Low Fare Airline Ticket May Cost You A Lot More Than You Think

The next time you book a low cost airline ticket to one of your favorite destinations on a low fare airline, be aware that if you’re checking a bag, you won’t know exactly where your bag is and neither will the airline.

Although many of us are excited to save on low airline rates to visit family members, have a getaway or for business travel, be aware that those low priced fares can potentially equate to significant missing services. One such service that I recently discovered was absent while traveling on a low fare airline was a centralized baggage system, which is standard when flying on a major commercial airline.

To say I travel a lot is an understatement. I often say, I hop planes like New Yorkers hop the train. Over my decades of traveling, I have been very fortunate to experience very few incidents regarding missing baggage. If my bag was missing when I arrive from a flight, it was always located, retrieved and returned to me within 24-48 hours. That was the case until recently.

Normally, I always fly on major airlines, but on occasion, when I find a significantly discounted fare, or it is the only flight available during a particular needed time, I will fly a low fare airline.

Earlier this year, I was flying to Chicago to attend the premiere party of my television show “Women on the Move,” when my luggage was lost while traveling on Spirit Airlines.

Unfortunately for me, there were thousands of dollars worth of items in my suitcase (exceeding the $3,500 maximum reimbursement amount). It was bad enough my bag hadn’t arrived, but what added insult to injury was the fact that due to their unsophisticated baggage system, they had absolutely no clue where my bag ended up and were unable to access a centralized system to locate it. So, realistically they didn’t even know if my bag made it on the plane at LaGuardia airport.

If I was on a major airline, they would be able to locate exactly where my bag was with just a few keystrokes. They would know if it was still in New York, in another city or if it was currently in route to me on another flight. With Spirit, they had absolutely no idea at all.

If you don’t check a bag and you just do a carry-on, then you don’t have to concern yourself with this non-existing baggage system.

But if you’re checking a bag with contents that are important to you, just know that depending on what you have in your bag, that great $100 round-trip deal that seems so wonderful could literally cost you a lot more than a major commercial airline ticket you were trying to avoid.

My Unexpected Lesson From Watching Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars – Part 2

My Unexpected Lesson From Watching Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars – Part 2

This is a continuation of Part 1.

In a recent episode of “Marriage Bootcamp: Reality Stars,” the participants focused on unpacking some of the issues they brought into their relationships. While unpacking their issues, they learned the necessary changes that were mandatory to move their relationships forward in a healthier, more fulfilling way.

Once the issues were identified, they had to put a shovel full of horse manure into a suitcase and have it chained to their wrists for the remainder of the day. The purpose of this exercise was to have them feel a physical impact and burden for carrying around their baggage.

After the exercise, the couples discussed why certain behaviors triggered certain responses. And of course, it was always connected to something from their past.

One of the participants told his spouse that she brought too much independence into their relationship. The husband shared with his wife that she should be using him to help her make decisions about certain things instead of her doing it all by herself.

That was really interesting for me to hear, because someone told me I was “too independent” in a previous relationship.

I realized from that exercise the potential impact of someone being “too independent” in a relationship and not allowing their partner to support them in certain decision making. I am accustomed to handling and making decisions with nearly all of the matters I deal with on my own. But when you’re in a significant, committed relationship, it is important to share some of those matters with your partner so they can feel as if they are contributing to support you and the issues you have to deal with in your life.

I thought it was a really interesting lesson coming from an unexpected place. Just another example that you can learn anything from anywhere.

So, the next time I get the opportunity to put this new lesson into practice, I will do so with the expectation of getting an amazingly different (or new?) result.

“Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars” airs on Fridays 9/8 Central on WeTV.

My Unexpected Lesson From Watching Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars – Part 1

My Unexpected Lesson From Watching Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars – Part 1

“Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars” is a television show I enjoy watching from time to time. The premise of the show is to support couples in being more conscious of the issues in their relationships and to help them do the necessary work around it for their relationships to improve.

It is really interesting to see the different exercises that are given to the couples for them to be able to overcome challenges in their relationships and to expose different aspects that they aren’t necessarily able to see on their own.

I normally only watch the show when there are people on it that I like. For this season, that compelling person for me was Pauly from the MTV mega hit “Jersey Shore.”

I never watched “Jersey Shore” when it first came on years ago, but since its record-breaking splash back on television, I have been somewhat consumed with it.

Because I can’t watch a show that has previous episodes I haven’t seen, I binge watched all of the previous episodes of the original show from the beginning so I could learn all the dynamics and previous relations with the cast mates.

It is so interesting to see the cast members’ evolution from who they were 10 years ago to who they are today. I happen to really like Pauly. So, when I saw he was appearing on this season of Marriage Bootcamp I thought I would watch it.

One of my friends, Rachel who happens to be a couples therapist, and I usually do a recap of the show when we are both watching the same season. So, I get to enjoy it first by watching the airing of the show and then by discussing the relationship issues and the impact of them with Rachel. Our relationship conversations can last for hours. I think to date our record is over 6 hours!

I am always intrigued to discover new ways of evolving and growing individually and in a relationship. Although I am not married at this time, I believe there are lessons and takeaways that can be used currently in my life and moving forward.

“Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars” airs on Fridays 9/8 Central on WeTV.
